Chisinau, July 15 /MOLDPRES/ – The parliament hosts a portraits exhibition by the Slovak politician Alexander Dubcek. The exhibition Alexander Dubcek – Human Face of Politics, is organized in the context of Slovakia taking over the EU Council Presidency for the second half of 2016, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The exhibition consists of a string of paintings by the illustrious Slovakian politician, made by photographer Vladimir Benko. Photos capture life moments of politician Alexander Dubcek, who became a symbol of the democratization of Slovakia in 1968. The pictures show both his political activity, as well as the private life of the politician.

The event was inaugurated by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, Slovakian Ambassador to Moldova Robert Kirnag and Czech Ambassador in Chisinau, Zdeněk Krejci. Attending the inauguration of the exhibition were President Nicolae Timofti, President of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tanase, parliamentarians and diplomats.

"I am honored to inaugurate this exhibition for two reasons. Firstly, Alexander Dubcek was a politician who had the courage to oppose the system and fought for freedom of thought and expression, for which he received the Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament. Secondly, Slovakia on 1 July  took over the EU Presidency and will maintain the engines of development. Now more then never, Moldova should come up with the message that it will continue to fight for European ideals and will become European Union member, when it is ready," said Andrian Candu.

"Alexander Dubcek really represents the human face of politics and contributed to the development and prosperity of the country. He was a great patriot and loved his people. He was the Parliament Speaker of Slovakia and was to be the president in 1993, if it had not been that accident," said Robert Kirnag.

Alexander Dubcek (November 27, 1921 – November 7, 1992) was a renowned Slovak politician. A former Member of Parliament and Parliament Speaker of Slovakia, laureate of the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thinking, 1989 issue, awarded by the European Parliament.

The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Slovakia in Moldova and the Foreign Ministry of Slovakia.
