Ukrainian authorities arrest Moldovan businessman for 40 days

Chisinau, 28 July /MOLDPRES/ - Businessman Veaceslav Platon has been arrested by the Ukrainian authorities for a 40-day period. The head of the General Prosecutor’s Office’s (PG) press service, Maria Vieru, confirmed the information for MOLDPRES.  

Veaceslav Platon is charged in the file on theft from Banca de Economii (Savings Bank, BEM), after he would have benefited from bad loans worth 800 million lei. 

PG’s information shows that the money was received from BEM in November 2014, and the period of receiving loans dates from 2011. Subsequently, over 800 million lei was taken out of Moldova through international transactions via more banks from Latvia and the United Kingdom.  

According to law-enforcers, based on the evidence accumulated, Moldovan prosecutors demanded that competent authorities of Ukraine extradite businessman Veaceslav Platon. Ukrainian intelligence service detained Platon on 25 July, after the Moldovan police had put him on a wanted list in the morning of that day.  

Veaceslav Platon runs the risk of being sentenced to 8-15 years of imprisonment, with deprivation of right to hold offices for five years.
