Moldova: 25 years of Independence
Vladimir Besleaga, writer, member of the first Parliament of Moldova, laureate of the State Prize, knight of the Order of the Republic
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Besleaga: I voted for the independence of the Republic of Moldova, as member of the first Parliament. Being romantics, we dreamed of this independence, first of all, from the former Soviet empire, the Commonwealth of Independent States and later – the Eurasian Union. In 1991, I thought we would have a true independence. Yet, unfortunately, it was not to be so. The situation is similar in a group work. Someone said that group work is good. But to organize it, one should have to feed and honor the group workers. The same is with our independence too. We do not have a well-developed economy and live mostly with loans. Since agrarians' rule till present, the parties have been confronting each other and we have not had an inner balance. And a country cannot be set up as a serious state without an inner balance. For this reason, I doubt if we succeed in building what we wanted from the very beginning – a state based on law, with real independence. With political intrigues, with a divided and disappointed society, one fails to get far. Therefore, I believe that our state presently needs an inner balance.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Besleaga: Our future is very variegated. There are wars, refugees and much mess in the world. We have a relative peace in Moldova ,but it smells like gunpowder. Pope Francisco said that the Third World War was in full swing. If we do not have NATO’s umbrella, then there is none to defend us.
