Moldova:25 years of independence
Mihail Cotorobai, former MP in the first parliament of Moldova (1990-1994), former judge at the Constitutional Court (1996-2002), ombudsman.
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Cotorobai: I think that at that time Moldova could have chosen one of more development ways, but taking into account the circumstances, the independence path was the most successful. Now after 25 years of independence, taking into account the results achieved at the political, economic and social levels, living conditions we reached, if the 1991 historic moment happened again, I would think very much about the path we would choose.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Cotorobai: Under the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, Moldova is a sovereign and independent state. I hope Moldova will become a prosperous state, a state which will serve the interests of all citizens and in which the rights and fundamental freedoms will be strictly observed. Moldova’s future is within European family.
