Moldova: 25 years of independence
Mircea Snegur, first president of Moldova
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Snegur: Then the unionist path was not under discussion, as the political establishment and leadership were aware that the people are not prepared for unification, as happens now. However, we followed a different path by restoring common spiritual space, economic integration by creating joint ventures, free movement without visas to both directions and others. I am sure that the most correct way of building independent state was chosen then, and I think the time has given us justice.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Snegur: Moldova’s future is in EU undoubtedly. Thus, the quality of achieving the EU-Moldova Association Agreement depends on perspective, date and day of accession to the EU.
