Moldova's future depends on evolution of relations between Russia, USA - former MP

Andrei Safanov, former MP of the first parliament

MOLDPRES:  After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?

Andrei Safanov: In my opinion, Moldova could develop with much success within Soviet Union, if it would be kept. I do not refer to the social system of that time, but I am speaking of great power, a strong state. A large market would have been always opened for Moldovan goods in this state, the production system would be preserved, and citizens would not have gone abroad, science and corresponding technologies could be developed. Yet, the Soviet Union was disbanded and this is reality.

In these conditions, the most advantageous model of integration for Moldova would be getting closer to the countries of former Soviet Union. Now, Moldova has no chances to be received in the EU, especially after Great Britain decided to leave the EU. At the same time, moving towards the former Soviet space, Moldova could relaunch industry and agriculture, especially that Moldovan ecological tomatoes are much better than the Turkish or Israeli ones.

MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?

Safanov: Moldova’s future depends on evolution of relations between Russia and U.S.A. However, it depends much on who will have greater influence in the southwest of the former Soviet Union. If Russia has greater influence, then chances of pro-Eurasian forces will be higher. If Americans succeed to weaken Russia and EU, then the US ally, Romania, could try with new forces to reunite Moldova, or the United States will use Moldova to circle Russia with a “cordon”. At the same time, if the struggle between East and West has a slow character, then the current uncertainty of Moldova will remain for a long time.
