Moldova: 25 years of independence
Cornel Ciurea, political analyst
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Cornel Ciurea: If I took it over again, I would have definitely chosen the path of Independence. Even if the Independence solution had been adopted as a reasonable compromise and it was not the real intention of Members of the first Parliament (some wanted the union, others – vassal of Russia), little by little independence becomes the only viable way for Moldova. Moreover, this route competes with the European project, which is seen by many people as a way of getting rid of sovereignty. And independence will similarly win this dispute – first comes sovereignty and independence, including Transnistria within the project and then, we can talk about a certain form of association in the EU.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Cornel Ciurea: I believe that Moldova will go through several attempts before it reaches an enhanced sovereignty. Building of the state of the country will take time and therefore we are not able nowadays to give verdicts assessing whether Moldova is a failed state or not. Of course, not everything depends on our own efforts. The Independence may be confiscated by various warp of large external actors, while at present, the main road, for the time being, can be nothing but the Independence consolidation.
