Moldova: 25 years of independence

Lilian Carp, MP of Moldovan parliament, Liberal Party faction.
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Carp: The political situation in 1991 was complicated, and there were too few MPs who really wanted unification. There were many people by declarations, but by deeds few ones. The 14th army and interfront strong movement, sabotaging unionist actions, were in Moldova. The best path would be unification. Thus, the injustice of Ribbentrop-Molotov pact would be removed, and we, Romanians from Bessarabia, were today in Europe and under the protection of NATO, fortifying our national unity.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Carp: Romanians from Moldova are favoured towards those who are residing in other countries. Unlike those from abroad, we can lead a policy directed towards unification. Thus, our future is in great Romania, a strong state, along with Europe. Independence from the Soviet Union is only a step towards unification.
