Vladimir Voronin, President of Moldova in 2001-2009
MOLDPRES: After the proclamation of Independence, Moldova could follow three ways of development: independent, unionist or closely dependent on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) (most recently, the Eurasian Union). Should we start from the very beginning, what path would you choose?
Voronin: I was and I am for independence path. However, we must have good relations with all countries and cooperate with international organizations, always focusing on the country development.
MOLDPRES: What future do you see for Moldova?
Voronin: I want citizens to have a worthy future in Moldova. During the eight years in power, maybe we failed to do everything, however we proved that Moldova has the potential to develop as an independent state with no credit and no debt. This should be done now.
At the same time, Moldova has possibilities to develop, if we do not allow robbers and nonprofessionals to come to power.
Referring to the forthcoming presidential elections, then I do not want to nominate candidates, as I know very well the foundations of professional and moral training of these candidates. Unfortunately, I do not see in them people concerned about the country’s fate.
