Moldovan businessman further investigated under home arrest

Chisinau, 25 August /MOLDPRES/ - The Court of Appeal today rejected the lawyers’ appeal of the Orhei mayor Ilan Sor on the Buiucani Court decision extending the mandate of house arrest for another 30 days.

Iulian Balan, Ilan Sor's attorney, said that "the court's decision is unfounded one. This is based on the arguments stated above, even if the magistrates were obliged to come up with new evidence. The decision taken is unclear, so we will put into discuss at the next hearing the preventive measure changing," said Balan.

Also today, many people protested before the Court of Appeal, requesting the release of the mayor of Orhei.

Ilan Sor was detained by the officers of corruption in a new criminal case on 22 June this year. The General Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal case on his behalf in December 2014. Ilan Sor is charged that on 4-25 November, 2014, secured by fraud, more than five billion lei from BEM, which he would have washed through dozens of offshore companies, amount confirmed by the KROLL memorandum, too. The suspect’s lawyers rejected the accusations, stating that he pleads not guilty.

Yesterday, the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office completed the investigation and forwarded the case to court initiated on the name of Ilan Sor. He risks 15 years in prison.
