Moldovan foresters celebrate their professional day

Chisinau, 17 September /MOLDPRES/ – The forestry sector employees in Moldova celebrate their professional day today. On this occasion, the Agency "Moldsilva" organized several traditional activities performed within the week.

The "forest days" agenda completed on 16 September at a festive meeting, by tracing the main national forestry’s objectives, too. "The main goal is the forest vegetation areas expand, profile alternative income sources, wise wood and non-timber resources use so that the forest meets all the ecological, social and economic purposes", outlined Ion Ciobanu, "Moldsilva" general manager.

There was announced the best forester of 2016 at the event, that is Mihai Merlan, employee of Nisporeni forestry.

Currently, Moldova’s forest area consists ​​about 448 thousand hectares (13.2 per cent of the country). Thus, forest is 11.4 per cent or 0,086 ha of forest per capita. Much of forest land (81 per cent) is owned by the state, 18.4 per cent is held by the local administration and only 0.6 per cent is private property.

The Agency "Moldsilva" was an autonomous institution several years, but in 2015 passed to the Ministry of Environment. This includes 24 units of forest and more than four thousand employees.

The forestry worker's day was established by the government decision in 1995 and is celebrated on the third Saturday of September.
