Moldovan specialsts say strong earthquates may have after-shocks with low magnitude

Chisinau, 24 September /MOLDPRES/ – More experts described the earthquake of magnitude of 5.0 degrees on the Richter scale which occured last night "as the strongest in the last 25 years", it is similar to the one that took place in Moldova on 31 May 1990.
The Civil Protection and Emergencies service of the Ministry of Interior announced today that in Moldova were not been registered property damage. The director of the Seismological Center at the Institute of Geology and Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Ion Ilieş said that usually such intensity earthquakes do not cause damage.
At the same time, the specialist noted that as a rule "after such shocks are not aftershocks or, if they occur, they have a low magnitude". "After 37 minutes of last night's earthquake there was registered one, with the intensity of 2.7 on the Richter scale," said Ion Ilieş, quoted by ziarulnational.md.
Since the beginning of the year, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, there were recorded over 160 earthquakes, and just six had a magnitude bigger than 4 on the Richter scale.
