Chisinau, 24 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Buiucani district court of Chisinau on 24 September extended the warrant of arrest for businessman Veaceslav Platon by another 30 days.
Veaceslav Platon was present at the last Saturday meeting, which lasted for more than six hours.
The case prosecutor, Andrei Baiesu, has said that “more risks were invoked for the prolongation of the warrant of arrest, such as the one of evading, hindering the carrying out of the investigation and committing other offences. We also presented statements by two witnesses, which prove the reasonable suspicion in committing the offence incriminated in the petition on prolongation of the preventive measure. These persons have connections with the signing of certain transactions,” Baiesu said.
The lawyer of Veaceslav Platon, Ana Ursachi, noted that the decision would be appealed at the Court of Appeal. “We expected such a ruling. The reasons presented today were formal. At the same time, the witnesses about whom they spoke are not trustworthy, for reasons that they even do not know Mr. Platon personally. These two statements were brought just to mime the investigation,” Ursachi stressed.
Also at the 24 September session, magistrates of the Buiucani court turned down the petition submitted by Platon on challenging judge Mihail Diaconu.
Businessman Veaceslav Platon was arrested by Ukrainian authorities at a request by Moldovan prosecutors. Platon is criminally prosecuted for swindle and money laundering in very large amount, which caused damage worth over 800 million lei to Banca de Economii (Savings Bank). Prosecutors reached conclusion that the money got by fraud in form of loans, was transferred to accounts of more off-shore companies, to conceal its illegal origin, and was subsequently used to pay off loans from Moldovan banks. The suspect’s lawyers rejected the charges brought by prosecutors, stressing that Platon pled not guilty.
