Moldovan, European officials broach election-related issues

Chisinau, 29 September /MOLDPRES/- Prime Minister Pavel Filip today had a meeting with a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter. The European officials visited Moldova in order to monitor the preparation for the 30 October elections, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The premier thanked the experts for the visit to Moldova and for the interest in electoral process. He noted that the direct election of president was to take place after a 20-year break, when the head of state was elected by parliament. “In my capacity as prime minister, I am most interested in these elections be fair and transparent, and statements saying the elections might be fraudulent are groundless,” he said.
At the same time, Filip informed the PACE delegation about the functioning of the State Register of Population and the way of data connection to the system developed by the Central Election Commission. “I am sure the Moldovan elections, in terms of the system we have, cannot be fraudulent, and more international observers will be accredited in order to make society to be convinced of this. Technically speaking, everything is ensured,” he also said.
PACE delegation was interested in opening polling stations abroad, as well as the students’ possibility to vote in the city they study. In the context, Filip said that the 100 polling stations from abroad had been opened under current statistics data and requests got from diaspora. At the same time, the citizens who want to vote in another settlement can register beforehand to the mayoralty of settlement they want to vote in order to be included in the additional electoral lists.
The officials also exchanged opinions about the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, economic relations between Moldova and foreign partners, Transnistrian conflict settlement, as well as the government programme for combating corruption.
