Moldovan speaker meets American officials in Washington

Chisinau, 30 September /MOLDPRES/- Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu has met U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nurland and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bridget Brink in Washington, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The speaker thanked the US officials for the constant support provided in Moldova’s European integration, as well as for the financial assistance in implementing different development projects.

Candu approached current issues on the agenda of Moldovan-American relations, as well as issues related to the social-political situation in Moldova, implementation of reforms set on the European agenda, dialogue with the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia within the parliamentary working group. The speaker also referred to the priority actions to speed up reforms, especially, in the financial-banking system and fight against corruption, as well as involvement of entire society in important projects. He said that holding of the presidential elections would take place in fair and transparent way.

The American officials welcomed the fulfillment of over 90 per cent of provisions of the roadmap on the priority reform agenda Moldova-EU. “The United States will back Moldova in getting the country programme with the International Monetary Fund, if all the IMF prerequisites are met,” they said in a joint declaration.

Nurland said she appreciated the good synchronization and cooperation between parliament and government from Chisinau. “I congratulate MPs and government from Chisinau for the achieved results. You have proved you can do it. Go ahead and have our full support in carrying out reforms,” the American official said.

For her part, Bridget Brink said that social dialogue, ensuring consensus and continuing reforms in Moldova were essential.

Candu said Moldova was facing a string of internal and external challenges, and their settlement needed continuous dialogue and identifying consensus in society.

The officials also discussed the regional situation and developments in the Transnistrian conflict settlement.

Candu pays a working visit to the USA on 28 September -5 October 2016.
