Chisinau, 2 October /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, along with the Moldovan Embassy in the United States, gave a reception in Washington on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Moldova’s independence. The event was held at the Library of the U.S. Congress, in the presence of governmental officials, important American political personalities and representatives of the national Diaspora, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
In a greeting message conveyed to the participants in the reception, Andrian Candu said that the 25 years of Moldova’s independence had been marked by more challenges, the overcoming of which took time and effort.
‘’The 25 years have not always been as we wanted – there were more changes, which sometimes took place too sharply, and we were not always able to respond as firmly and worthily as the promoters of the struggle for independence had done this. Looking at the events since the proclamation of independence till present retrospectively, we must recognize that Moldova’s transformation had lasted more and that there is no quick recipe for success,’’ the speaker noted.
At the same time, Andrian Candu also said that Moldova presently had a well-defined country project – the irreversible goal of European integration. ‘’Just as a quarter of century ago, we committed to a new journey. We have a clear-cut choice – political association and economic integration into the European Union,’’ the parliament speaker said.
The speaker thanked the USA for the assistance provided to Moldova during time to strengthen the state based on the rule of law and in projects on the country’s modernization. ‘’In this quarter of century, the USA was behind our democratic reform and integration into EU, backing our efforts to consolidate a young state, which aspires to have its proper place among the democratic nations,’’ Andrian Candu said.
For her part, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bridget Brink welcomed the reforms committed to be carried out by the Moldovan leadership and encouraged the ruling coalition to continue implementing the beneficial reforms for citizens.
‘’The USA supports the progress assumed by Moldova. During the 25 years of independence, Moldova has made efforts to become a more prosperous and more democratic country, for the good of the citizens. We welcome the positive actions of the Chisinau governance and the reforms underway to provide Moldova with a European future,’’ said Bridget Brink.
Congressmen David Price and Joseph Pitts conveyed messages of support to Moldova.
Attending the event, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence Michael Carpenter appreciated the exemplary participation of Moldovan servicemen in peacekeeping missions, stressing the support provided by the USA to organize studies and qualification courses for sappers and engineers. Former Ambassador of the USA to Moldova Pamela Smith participated in the reception and conveyed a congratulatory message to Moldovan citizens, in the Romanian language.
The atmosphere of holiday at the event was completed by a folk band, made up of Moldovans of the Diaspora living in the United States, who offered the American guests a show of folk songs and dances.
