Moldovan parliament to organise hearings to assess enforcement of laws in justice sector

Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament will assess the progress and arrears in the enforcement of the laws regarding the justice sector reforms. The initiative belongs to Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.  

The subjects considered at the hearings will be focused on the level of implementation of the justice sector reform strategy for 2011-2016, laws approved by the parliament concerning the reformation of the Prosecution and the integrity package.   

An expert of the Basel-based Institute on Governance, Pedro Gomes Prereira will unveil conclusions and recommendations of an analytical study on mechanisms of recovery and confiscation of assets in Moldova. In the context, legislative initiatives on the recovery of criminal assets will be proposed to parliament for discussion. The initiatives are elaborated by a working group made up of experts of the civil society and representatives of the National Anticorruption Centre, based on study’s recommendations.     

Participating in the hearings will be heads of parliamentary commissions, MPs, ministers, anticorruption prosecutors, representatives of the civil society,  diplomatic corps accredited in Chisinau and development partners.    

In the beginning of the autumn session, Speaker Andrian Candu informed that the MPs’ efforts, in the current session, would be focused on parliamentary control and assessing the implementation of the laws passed by the parliament, in the context of the priority reforms underway. Hearings have been earlier organized on the platform of the Parliamentary Council for European Integration, on the results of the implementation of the provisions of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Moldova and the European Union, as well as on developments in the country’s energy sector.      

The public hearings will be held on 13 October.
