Moldovan cabinet approves draft law on National Centre on Personal Data Protection

Chisinau, 13 October /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers, at a meeting on 12 October, approved a draft law on the National Centre on Personal Data Protection and a package on amendment and completion of legislative acts. The drafts are aimed at strengthening the competent authorities’ capacities via fortifying the mechanism of control over the observance of the legal provisions on personal data protection.
The goal of the documents is to enhance the institutional and operational independence of the aforementioned authority and also see starting pecuniary actions for the infringement of the principles of personal data protection. The centre will be able to intervene promptly to remove infringements committed by operators, in the light of the security incidents admitted in the personal data recording systems, and will also be able to carry out the control of the lawfulness of the processing of the personal data, made through the system of record of data belonging to private persons. This measure has not been regulated properly so far.
The drafts were worked out in line with the commitments assumed by Moldova in the context of integration into the European Union.
The package of laws is to be submitted to parliament for consideration.
In 2015, 397 operators and 715 systems of personal data recording were registered in the register of recording the personal data operators, against 107 and, respectively, 274 in 2014.
