Campaign to fight human trafficking launched in Moldova

Chisinau, 18 October /MOLDPRES/ – The National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking, in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labour, Family, and Social Protection, today launched the national campaign "Week for Combating Trafficking of Human Beings," which will run from 18 – 24 October 2016.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of civil society about the risks and consequences of trafficking in human beings, the progress of the anti-trafficking community, review gaps and obstacles in implementing the European Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.
The Interior Minister Alexander Jizdan said during the event that in 2016, in Moldova, there has been a decrease of this phenomenon compared to previous years.
"In the first nine months of this year it was detected 94 crimes of this kind, compared to 125-126 cases in previous periods. However, there is a 25 per cent decrease in child trafficking," said Jizdan.
At her part, Deputy Minister of Labour, Social Protection and Family Viorica Dumbraveanu noted that authorities have been focusing their efforts on both, as aspects of combating human trafficking, so on measures to protect victims and potential victims. For this purpose, there were opened centres for victims in the capital and districts of Moldova.
During the campaign, it will be presented the report for strategic analysis "Monitoring the situation on human trafficking – analysis of crime condition and dynamics for 2015", there will be organized three workshops for members of multidisciplinary teams in preventing and combating this phenomenon, there will be held lectures with university students throughout Moldova, there will open an art exhibition marking the European Day on Anti-trafficking etc. Also, there will take place activities in Moldova, with the direct involvement of territorial commissions to combat trafficking of human beings.
The national campaign to combat human trafficking contains 107 activities, out of which 34 will be held at the central level and 73 at the local level. The European Day against Human Trafficking is marked on 18 October, which was first designated in 2006 by the European Commission. In Moldova, it is marked the fifth time consecutively.
