Austria marks National Day today

Chisinau, 26 October /MOLDPRES/ - Austria, a landlocked state in Central Europe, placed on the medium course of Danube between Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland, marks its National Day today.    

Austria has an area of 83,800 square km and a population of 8.47 million residents. The country’s capital is the Vienna city, with over 1.5 million residents. The other big cities are Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Villach, Wels, Krems, Baden.  

Austria has a representative parliamentary democracy, made up of two federal lands. It is one of the richest countries of the world, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of 48,350 dollars (2011). The country has developed a high living standard and ranked 19th in the world according to the Human Development Index in 2011. It has been UN member since 1955 and joined the European Union in 1995. Austria in 1995 signed the Schengen Agreement and adopted the single European currency, Euro, in 1999.   

Austria exports oil and chemical products, transport means, rum, sugar and imports machines and industrial equipments, food products, consumer goods. The country has foreign trade with the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Japan, etc.  

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Austria were established on 25 March 1992.

Among the Austrian biggest economic agents present on Moldova’s market, there are the companies of the financial and banking group Reiffeisenbank, Grawe insurance company, bar firm Schoenherr, Erste Bank through the BCR (Romanian Commercial Bank) branch.   

In 2015, Austria ranked 11th among the partner countries with which Moldova carries out exports, with a value of 21.6 million dollars. As for the imports, on the same period, Austria was on the fifth position in the list of partner countries in carrying out imports, with a value of 89.5 million dollars.   

All projects implemented by the Austrian government in Moldova are estimated at 19 million euros.
