Chisinau, 26 October /MOLDPRES/ - The candidate for presidential elections on behalf of the Democratic Party (PDM), Marian Lupu, withdraws from the electoral race in favour of the common right-wing candidate. Lupu made statements to this effect at a news briefing today.

“As a result of analysing opinion polls and the evolution of things in the political sector of the country on the last period, I ruled to withdraw from the electoral race in favour of the candidate with greater chances to be victorious over the representative of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Igor Dodon, with the former being the common candidate of the Dignity and Truth Party and Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). Both me and PDM have proved that we can make important steps when the national interest demands this. Moldova needs a pro-European president, who is to work along with the parliament and government,” Lupu said.

At the same time, the official said that the important thing for PDM in this campaign was that a pro-European candidate wins the elections, who could continue the reforms and maintain balance in the country.

For his part, the first deputy PDM leader, Vlad Plahotniuc, noted that the opinion polls of the last time had showed that PAS leader Maia Sandu was the most representative pro-European candidate for the 30 October elections.

“The decision can be shocking for some people; yet, it is logical for us. This is, first of all, for the country’s major interest. By this decision, we want to consolidate the country’s European vector and modernize the country. If the opinion polls show that there is another candidate, who has surer chances to gain victory, we as party, show that we can take important decisions for the country. This is a decision coming as a result of consultations with people in the territory, with the European partners. PDM will back the right-wing candidate to win the presidential elections.”

Direct presidential polls will take place in Moldova on 30 October.
