Chisinau, 27 October /MOLDPRES/- Candidate for the presidential elections on behalf of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) Iurie Leanca announced he remained in electoral race for the 30 October elections. He made the statement at a news briefing today.

According to Leanca, it is very important for Moldova to continue the European integration. “Starting from the first day of campaign I told that the main adversary is Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon, who proposes a path leading the country into the abyss. There is a risk he will win in the first round, if there are withdrawals from the electoral race. Therefore, I decided to remain in election campaign for the president position. We cannot give up the sacrifices made so far on the Association Agreement with EU and visa free regime,” he said.

Leanca said that two days ago, he decided to withdraw from electoral race in order to help Maia Sandu to accede to runoff. “I have changed my decision after I saw the emotional and irrational reaction to reject the support of Democrats’ candidate Marian Lupu. I realized that there is a very high risk that Igor Dodon will become president even in the first round.

Therefore, I decided to remain in the electoral race and to offer citizens an alternative,” Leanca said.

On 26 October, Marian Lupu announced he withdrew from electoral race in favor of common candidate.

Today, independent candidate Valeriu Ghiletchi announced he would continue the electoral campaign and was not going to withdraw from the presidential elections.

Direct presidential elections will take place in Moldova on 30 October.
