Czech Republic marks Independence Day

Chisinau, 28 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Czech Republic, a state placed in the Central Europe, between Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria, marks its Independence Day today.
The country has an area of 78,866 square kilometers and a population of 10.5 million residents. The state’s capital is the Prague city, with a population of 1.5 million residents. The other big cities are Brno, Ostrava, Plzen, Zaluzi, Hradec, etc.
The Czech Republic is the first former member of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, which got the status of developed country from the World Bank. The country has the highest Human Development Index of the Central and Eastern Europe, being a state with a “quite high human development.” The Czech Republic is on the third position on a list of the most peaceful countries of Europe and the most democratic and sound one (in terms of infant mortality) in the region.
Starting from 1991, the Czech Republic, in the beginning as part of Czechoslovakia, and then as an independent state, has been a member of the Visegrad Group, and following 1995 – of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Czech Republic joined the NATO on 12 March 1999 and the European Union on 1 May 2004. The country held the Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2009.
The Czech Republic exports machines and equipment, raw materials, fabrics and ready-made clothes, glass products, footwear, furniture. It imports industrial raw materials, fuels, chemical and agro-food products. The country has foreign trade with Germany, Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Russia, etc.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and the Czech Republic were established on 1 June 1992. The trade exchanges in January-August 2015 amounted to 49.9 million dollars. Data by the National Statistics Bureau shows that the export of goods recorded 17.9 million dollars (ranking 15th); the goods imports stood at 32 million dollars (16th position), dropping by 25.8 per cent against the same period of 2014.
