Chisinau district court issues warrant of arrest for 12 customs officers detained in corruption file

Chisinau, 4 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Buiucani district court of Chisinau has issued warrants of arrest of 25 and 30 days for 12 customs officers in a corruption file on 1 November. Another 18 persons, detained in the same file, will be prosecuted at large.  

The press officer of the National Anticorruption Centre, Angela Starinschi, has said that the 18 persons (six border policemen, six economic operators, two customs officers and seven bus drivers) will be prosecuted at large, after they have recognized their guilt.    

All the 30 persons were accused for corruption, forgery of public documents and abuse of power.

The operation of detaining them took place at the Sculeni and Leuseni customs checkpoints on 1 November. Law-enforcers said that they had gathered evidence proving the guilt of the persons detained, after carrying out tens of searches at their homes, vehicles and busses.  

The detained persons run the risk of being sentenced to up to ten years of imprisonment, depending on the degree of involvement of each defendant, as well as on the damage caused.  

On 30 September 2016, another 28 customs officers from the border checkpoints   Tudora and Palanca were detained in a similar operation.
