Chisinau, 7 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) and the Causeway Institute from the United Kingdom today signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen capacities in the transitional justice sector among prosecutors and other law-enforcement bodies from Moldova.

According to the PG press service, the document was signed within a programme titled, Introduction and development of capacities of law-enforcement bodies in transitional justice field as mechanism of regulation in post-conflict society. The programme’s goal is to provide support and enhance the capacity of law-enforcers and government in the transitional justice sector, as well as to familiarize Moldovan prosecutors and judges with international practices.

At the event, Acting Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen said the signing of the memorandum represented “a new stage of bilateral partnership, through which good practices of conflicts’ regulation will be promoted. This will allow taking over and developing mechanisms of enforcing transitional justice and related initiatives, implemented during the peace process,” reads a press release by the institution.

Executive Director of the Causeway Institute Kingsley Donaldson has said that “the transitional justice is a term defining a string of legal and non-legal measures implemented by the government and diverse actors of the society, in order to correct the abusive infringements of the human rights, committed in the past, which evoke an evil political heritage.”

The programme on support on behalf of the Causeway Institute consists in trainings with participation of national and international trainers, with special education in the transitional justice sector, based on good practices from Northern Ireland. The programme will be carried out till next March. The first training courses for prosecutors will be held on 8-11 November 2016.

The Causeway Institute for Peace-Building and Conflict Resolution International is a non-governmental organization from the United Kingdom, which has been working in Moldova since 2015, in the field of measures to consolidate trust between the two banks of the Dniester river and Transnistrian settlement.
