Chisinau, 16 November /MOLDPRES/- Employees of the Police General Inspectorate (IGP) today detained the main individual in case on corruption of MPs, Vitalie Burlacu. IGP deputy head Gheorghe Cavcaliuc confirmed the information.
Cavcaliuc noted that Burlacu had been detained in Vadul lui Voda city. “He was escorted to IGP, and materials are drafted now to be handed over to the Anticorruption Prosecution. More details will be provided to media via a communiqué or a news briefing,” he said.
Former policeman Vitalie Burlacu and his friend Irina Baglai were caught in the act in March 2014, while handing 250,000 dollars to an intermediary. The money was meant for a MP to leave the ruling coalition.
The two defendants were released under judicial control, after being a long time in prison.
Subsequently, on 12 July 2016, Vitalie Burlacu and Irina Baglai were sentenced to prison. Burlacu had to be sentenced to 11 years and 4 months in prison and Baglai – 3 years, by suspending execution of punishment for two-year probation term. The decision was ruled by the Buiucani court in the absence of the accused, as he is put into national and general search.
Magistrates decided Burlacu would stay in semi-closed prison. Also, he was fined 160,000 lei. At the same time, the magistrates ordered to confiscate money on the criminal case. It is about 553,000 euros, 403,000 dollars and 48,000 Russian rubles.
The defendants’ lawyers have previously announced that the decision was illegal and groundless.
