Moldovan diplomat detained for bribery

Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/- Moldova's Consul General in Istanbul Veaceslav Filip was detained at the Chisinau airport on 16 November, suspected of taking bribes. Acting Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen confirmed the information.
“The diplomat would have taken bribes to issue various consular documents to many people. We cannot provide more details, investigations are carried out, other information will be offered during a news briefing,” Harunjen said.
At the same time, prosecutors conducted searches at the consul’s home, after detention.
Also, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry (MAEIE) announced it took note of consul’s detention. “Mr. Filip works in the diplomatic system since 15 July 1993, and during the professional activity, there were no found any irregularities, he had performed well in service and was a devoted colleague,” the quoted source reads.
In the context, MAEIE appealed to law enforcement bodies and media on “respecting the presumption of innocence of detained person, seen in the Constitution. The ministry will cooperate with investigation and will provide all necessary information to make clear on case,” according to the MAEIE’s press service.
