Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - Magistrates of the Buiucani district court of Chisinau today extended the warrant of home arrest for Orhei city mayor Ilan Shor for another 30 days.
According to the case prosecutor, Andrei Baiesu, the Orhei mayor will be under preventive arrest till 19 December 2016.
The lawyer of Ilan Shor, Denis Ulanov, has said that the decision was illegal and there was no ground to keep Ilan Shor under home arrest. “I have talked many times about the lack of arguments to prolong the warrant of home arrest. We will submit an appeal to the Court of Appeal. Also, we repeatedly demand that the court sessions be public. In a short period, we will invite to the trial more witnesses who can prove the innocence of Ilan Shor,” Ulanov noted.
Ilan Shor was detained by anticorruption officers in a new criminal file on 22 June 2016. The Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal file against Shor back in December 2014. The Orhei mayor is blamed with having got, by fraud, over five billion lei from Banca de Economii (Savings Bank), which he would have laundered through offshore companies, a sum confirmed also in the report of the Kroll international company. The suspect’s lawyers rejected the charges brought by prosecutors, noting that Shor pleads not guilty.
Ilan Shor runs the risk to be sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.
