Communist party of Moldova leader re-elected as head of political formation

Chisinau, 19 November /MOLDPRES/ – Vladimir Voronin was re-elected today with an overwhelming majority of votes as the party’s chairman, within the framework of the VIIIth  Congress of the Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM).

At the same time, against Voronin voted three members and two delegates abstained.

In his activity report, Vladimir Voronin said that the recent four years PCRM had suffered several strokes, the largest being a leaving parliamentary faction and party ranks by 14 Communist MPs, six of whom were members of the Executive Committee.

However, Vladimir Voronin outlined, that "PCRM even in opposition is the essential force defending the people’s interests."

The Communist leader put to critics the ruling coalition, noting that "in the seven years since pro-European parties being at power, people's lives have worsened significantly, the billion was stolen and Moldova became a captive state." He also reiterated his stance on recent presidential elections, considering them illegitimate and unconstitutional. In this context, he noted that the elected president had no rights and powers and his attempts to change the situation in Moldova would be in vain.

At the same time, Vladimir Voronin said that PCRM did not recognize these elections and would not work with a president elected in Constitution’s violation. He expressed confidence that the situation in Moldova would change only through early parliamentary elections.

The VIIIth Congress also elected the governing bodies of the party. Here, it held the first plenary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. The Congress made some amendments in the party statute, too.
