Moldovan authorities, public associations launch campaign against gender violence

Chisinau, 25 November /MOLDPRES/ – The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family (MMPSF) today launched the international campaign "Sixteen days of activism against gender based violence" with the slogan "Break the cycle of violence! Take a step towards change!"

According to Labour Ministry’s press service info, the campaign will organize over eighty events in Moldova, including discussions in schools, workshops with police, exhibitions of painting, discussions in local communities etc.

Lilia Pascal, Head of Department at Labour Ministry, said at the event that "the ministry has improved mechanism to protect victims of domestic violence and broadened the range of their rights by approving the draft law on amending and supplementing some acts in preventing and combating domestic violence," stipulates the institution’s press release.

At her part, the UN Women Country Office head of Moldova – United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, Ulziisuren Jamsran said that "only women who have gone through violence and surpassed it know how it can be lifted and UN Organization in Moldova will support the Government and civil society to combat domestic violence."

The campaign "Sixteen days of activism against gender violence" was launched in 1991, and for the first time in 14 editions, the opening of the campaign took place in the rural area in Criuleni village, Boscana district. It will last till 10 December, the International Day of Human Rights.
