Persons with special needs on visit to Moldovan parliament

Chisinau, 30 November /MOLDPRES/ - The accessibility of the parliament building and social inclusion were discussed at a meeting to parliament by a group of persons with special needs today, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
This is the first visit to the restored parliament building by a big group of people in wheelchairs. The visitors appreciated the accessibility of the building and the present facilities for persons with special needs in parliament. In particular, two lifts are presently set on stairs for persons with disabilities, which allow entering the parliament and the session hall. Also, bathrooms for people with special needs and adapted lifts are built.
The visitors discussed with MP Valentina Buliga. The lawmaker said she would notify the parliament, in order to create a commission due to monitor the way the legislation on social inclusion of persons with special needs is enforced. According to Buliga, the present norms are in line with the European practices, but there are certain difficulties of implementation. The sides agreed on the concerned commission to be made up also of representatives of disabled persons, who will supervise the way their rights are observed, and will also check accessibility to buildings.
“I will prepare an amendment to change the legislation and the parliament, along with the government and local public authorities are to find a proper solution to the special needs of these people,” Valentina Buliga said.
The initiative of organizing the visit belongs to the parliament’s administration and was launched before the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The visit’s goal was to present opportunities of visiting the parliament for all Moldovan residents, as well as consulting beneficiaries to improve the accessibility of the building, which is further under reconstruction.
