Chisinau, 5 December /MOLDPRES/ - The runoff of the elections to the people’s Assembly (local parliament) took place in the Gagauz-Yeri Autonomous Territorial Unit on 4 December.
According to the head of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) from UTA Gagauz-Yeri, Ivan Comur, 15 of the 35 lawmakers of Gagauzia’s People’s Assembly were elected in the runoff.
“Over 80,000 ballot papers were printed for this round of the polls. The voter turnout was of 42.2 per cent, i.e. at the same level as in the first round. At the same time, the elections were declared null in the Vulcanesti town, because of the too low voter turnout,” Comur said.
Also, the runoff will be held in the settlements Besalma and Ceadir-Lunga on 18 December, after the polls were declared null in the first round, on grounds that the voter turnout was lower than one third of the electors.
“Within the elections, six notifications were submitted to CEC on non-observance of the silence day, as well as on other infringements. According to the results of the two rounds of the polls, 32 out of 35 MPs of the People’s Assembly have been elected in all,” Comur specified.
The People’s Assembly of UTA Gagauz-Yeri is the representative and legislative authority of the autonomy, among the powers of which is also filing legislative initiatives in the parliament of Moldova.
Twenty eight national and international observers were accredited for the elections to the Gagauz People’s Assembly.
