Candidate for prosecutor general's office of Moldova appointed

Chisinau, 7 December /MOLDPRES/ – The actual interim Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen is the nominee for the position of Prosecutor General. The decision was announced today during the meeting of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP), as a result of conducting a public contest for this position.
Eduard Harunjen was born on 19 May 1972 in Cupcini town, Edinet district. From 1994 until 1996 he worked as a prosecutor in the Prosecution Section in Chisinau. From 1996 until 2005 he worked as Deputy chief of more departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. During 2011 – 2013 he was a prosecutor in the Prosecutor General's special mission, and later served as anti-corruption prosecutor and first deputy Prosecutor General. Since March this year he has been working as interim Prosecutor General.
Totally, there were allowed six candidates to the interview stage: current interim interim Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen, Deputy Prosecutor General Iurie Garaba and Igor Serbinov, the head of the Anti-corruption Prosecutor Viorel Morari, Prosecutor of Chisinau city Igor Popa and prosecutor of Prosecutor’s office Ciocana district, Ruslan Casu.
According to the new Law on Prosecution, the President will appoint the Prosecutor General at CSP proposal for a term of seven years, which may be renewed. President, similar to judges, can reject the CSP proposed candidacy just once. The refusal must be motivated, while at repeated proposal made by 2/3 of CSP members, the President must sign the decree appointing the Prosecutor General.
Prosecutor General can be dismissed by the President of Moldova on the proposal of CSP, under the law, for objective reasons and under a transparent procedure.
