National Art Musem of Moldova hosts exhibition of Latvian folk costume

Chisinau, 13 September /MOLDPRES/- An exhibition of Latvian folk costume opened at the National Art Museum of Moldova on 12 September. It is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Moldova and Latvia and the 100th anniversary of the formation of Latvia.

Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc expressed her gratitude to Latvia which together with Lithuania and Estonia was among the first countries that supported the independence of Moldova.

According to the ministry’s press service, the official congratulated Latvian Ambassador to Moldova E.S. Atis Lots for the initiative to mark the bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries by inaugurating an exhibition of Latvian national costume. “A national costume does not just mean a coat. It represents the inner universe of a nation and the spirituality of a people emblazoned in the ornaments”, Babuc said. The minister noted that the bilateral relations are on the rise and voiced confidence that Moldova will find itself alongside Latvia in the big European family.

The event is organized by the Embassy of Latvia in Moldova, in collaboration with the Sena klēts centre and National Art Museum of Moldova. The exhibition includes 10 costumes from the five regions of Latvia - Vidzeme, Latgale, Augšzeme sau Selia, Zemgale and Kurzeme, representing different traditions of wearing popular costume and combination of parts specific to each costume.

The national costume is one of the most remarkable cultural heritage in Latvia. It is not just simple pieces of clothing, great beauty and craftsmanship, but also a sense of belonging to the Latvian people. The Sena klēts center has created a collection of over 70 popular costumes from different regions of Latvia.

The exhibition will be open to the public by 12 October.
