Chisinau, 28 February /MOLDPRES/ - The hydrological centre of the State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) today issued a warning, reading that the water level in the upper course of the Prut river (Ukraine) would increase on the period 28 February – 2 March.
The hydrological centre warns that, given the precipitation recorded and the melting of snow, on the aforementioned time interval, the water level would grow by 0.4-0.8 metres on the segment Criva – Costesti-Stanca against the level from 28 February.
Hydrologists said that the water would flow within the limits of the minor river bed.
SHS hydrologists have earlier informed about the peculiarities of the 2020 year phenomenon of the “big waters of spring.” It is characterized by slow increases of the water level in rivers during spring, which is repeated each year, caused by the melting of snow, precipitation and warmth.
Thus, the Hydrological Centre said that, “while taking into account the specific feature of the 2019-2020 winter, the character of the big waters of spring will be prompted by the evolution of the meteorological and hydrological processes, i.e. the quantity and intensity of precipitation and the thermal regime. Or, in the 2020 spring, the volume of flowing of big spring waters is forecast to be lower, with values under the norm. Such values are recorded once in three years in the Dniester river and once in eight years in the Prut river.”
