Moldovan parliament suspends law on shortening punishments for convicts detained in precarious conditions

Chisinau, 6 March /MOLDPRES/ - The enforcement by law courts of the shortening of the punishment for the convict detained in precarious conditions will be suspended. The MPs today adopted a draft law in the first reading.
Under the draft, the enforcement by law court of the shortening of the punishment of the convict detained in precarious conditions is suspended, according to the provisions of the Article 385, paragraph (5), Articles 4732, paragraph (3) and 4734 paragraph (4) from Moldova’s Criminal Procedure Code.
The new provisions will not be enforced concerning the complains submitted in the conditions of the Article 4732, paragraph (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, till the date of the current law’s entering into force.
At the same time, the government till 1 September 2020 will submit to parliament a draft law on the improvement of the compensatory mechanism.
According to data by the National Administration of Penitentiaries, till 10 February 2020, decision-makers recorded 5,372 complaints by convicts on precarious conditions of detention in Moldova’s penitentiary institutions, out of the overall number of 6,700 convicts who are in custody of the state.
