Moldovan finance ministry demands that commercial banks postpone payments on loans

Chisinau, 17 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Finance Ministry has asked the commercial banks to postpone the payments on credits, given the situation emerged by the spread of the new-type coronavirus COVID-19.
The ministry’s leadership today exchanged opinions with the management of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), as well as with representatives of the systemic commercial banks. Thus, in the context of the evolution of the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 infection, the Finance Ministry asked to consider possibility to suspend or postpone, on the period of March-May 2020, the payments on the loans provided by commercial banks to citizens.
Also, the authorities demanded that, for the period March-May 2020, no penalties be applied for the non-payment on term of the sums due to be paid.
This measure was demanded, in order to protect the Moldovan citizens’ capacities of payments, the public health and safety on the whole, as well as to limit the negative effects of the pandemic on the banking system.
