Chisinau, 23 March /MOLDPRES/- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration does not recognize the so-called "presidential elections" held on 22 March in Abkhazia region of Georgia, the MAEIE’s press service has reported.
The MAEIE thinks that the pseudo-elections, held illegally in the territory of a sovereign state, are null and void, since they come in contradiction with the fundamental rules and principles of international law set out in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act.
In this connection, MAEIE calls on the international actors concerned to take all necessary measures to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the Ceasefire Agreement of 12 August 2008 on peace, security and respect for human rights, including by ensuring access of the EU Mission to monitor the situation in the regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and Țhinvali / South Ossetia.
In this context, fully sharing the concerns of the Georgian authorities on the perpetuation of serious human rights violations in the territories, the MAEIE reiterates the main position of the Republic of Moldova to further support the efforts to regulate the political and diplomatic conflict around the two Georgian regions, respecting the internationally recognized sovereignty, territorial integrity and borders of Georgia.
