Moldovan president approached situation on food security in country in times of crisis

Chisinau, 30 March /MOLDPRES/- President Igor Dodon visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment on Saturday to discuss current issues in the areas, under crisis conditions, the presidential press service has reported.
Firstly, the sides considered the situation on food security of Moldova. Minister Ion Perju informed Igor Dodon that wheat reserves in the country are 200 thousand tons, sufficient for at least 200 days. By that time, the new crops will already be harvested, which will be sown on an area of 316 thousand hectares, one half of the land is in good condition, and the other half - in satisfactory condition.
At the same time, Perju noted that the reserves of sunflower oil are sufficient for a period of four months, and of sugar and corn - for more than a year. He said that the country is provided with dairy products, meat and chicken eggs; enterprises in the food industry operate under normal conditions, with strict observance of the health and quarantine rules; zootechnical farms are provided with feed base; spring work has begun on schedule, barley and peas have already been sown.
Also, the minister assured that all spring works are carried out according to the schedule, without restrictions, the agricultural shops are open for the supply of seeds, planting material and fertilizers, spare parts and agricultural technique.
An important topic that was addressed during the discussion was the forestry of the Republic of Moldova. At present, the country has stocks of 186 thousand cubic meters of wood, of which 143 thousand are for firewood, and 30 thousand - working wood. At the same time, since 13 March the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and the Environment has completely banned the felling of forests in the country.
