Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/. – The young man who triggered a traffic accident from 17 May, in the wake of which two people died and four ones were injured, has been detained and will be prosecuted. He runs the risk of being sentenced up to ten years of imprisonment, with the deprivation of the right to drive. The head of the National Inspectorate of Public Security (INSP), Sergiu Paiu, made statements to this effect at a news conference today.
According to Paiu, the young man committed other contraventions in the last years, for which he was sanctioned. ‘’Biological samples were collected from the driver of the Audi vehicle, in order to find out whether he was driving drunk. The result will be made public soon,’’ Paiu said.
He noted that the Interior Ministry’s (MAI) leadership would come up with proposals to amend the legislation and toughen the sanctions for excessive speed and driving drunk.
The INSP head said that verifications had been instructed, in order to see whether illegal car races were organized in the Moldovan capital and whether they were tolerated by law-enforcers. ‘’If this information is proved to be true, then all people involved will be sanctioned or even dismissed,’’ Paiu added.
According to MAI statistics, 498 traffic accidents, which resulted in 68 people died, occurred in the first four months of 2020.
On 17 May, two persons, a taxi driver and his passenger, died after their car had been hit by an Audi vehicle driven by a 28-year-old man. In the wake of the violent impact, the Audi car was thrown into another vehicle and four people got diverse injuries.
