Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ - The first president of Moldova, Mircea Snegur, considers that the adoption of the Declaration on Sovereignty was the first step towards the Independence.
According to the first Moldovan president, after the 1990 elections, new patriot politicians appeared in parliament along with the old guard of the nomenclature; they had visions absolutely different from what had been inoculated to the citizens during half a century, in the post-war years.
”These lawmakers hinted, from the very beginning, that Moldova must be master at home, on everything which belongs to it from God and immediately after the parliament started working, the adoption of the concerned decisions began, among which the ratification of the union legislative acts before being used on the territory of Moldova, etc. On 23 June 1990, a miracle took place, with the MPs proving not only courage, but also special dignity, by adopting the Declaration on Sovereignty, which embodied in a normative act the ideas and aspirations with which the lawmakers came in parliament, and which were backed by the wide masses of the residents; this means that Moldova declared itself to be master on the then situation on all dimensions. Thus, everything which God gave us, starting from 23 June, belongs to the people of Moldova,’’ the first head of state said.
Mircea Snegur noted that the Declaration on Sovereignty contains more aspects, which regard the system of governance, creation of the rule of law state, democratization of the society, security system, etc. ‘’The Declaration on Sovereignty subsequently served as principal basis for the Declaration on Independence and adoption of a new Constitution. This was the first step to the Independence,’’ the former president of Moldova, Mircea Snegur added.
The Declaration on Sovereignty was adopted on 23 June 1990.
