Chisinau, 24 June /MOLDPRES/ - About 250,000 households from Moldova will participate in a social experiment, which is set to reduce the consumption of electric energy during the restrictions triggered by COVID-19. Statements to this effect were made today within the EU Sustainable Development Week, marked in Moldova too.
This campaign represents a boosting of a similar exercise carried out in 2019 by Premier Energy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova for 20,000 households from Chisinau.
Thus, the households the annual energy consumption of which in 2019 exceeded 140 KW/hour will receive statistics, which will compare their data with the one of the efficient consumers from the energy viewpoint of their community. The letters also contain advice and solutions to save energy on the period #Staiacasă (# StayAt Home) and encourage people to pay their invoices online, as a safety measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
„To back a more responsible consumption of energy in the urban zone and the rural one in Moldova, we extend this initiative in the rest of the country and all households, with the hope to weaken the pressure of the high demand, which presently affects the local energy sector, to stimulate a rational consumption, to minimize the imprint of carbon and motivate people to opt for online payments. We will assess the impact of the extension of this experiment, in order to contribute to the elaboration of the policies concerning the consumption of sustainable energy,’’ the UNDP resident representative in Moldova, Dima Al-Khatib said.
„We are proud to continue our cooperation with UNDP Moldova, aimed at innovation, in order to encourage household consumers to use intelligent electric energy resources, including on this difficult period of COVID-19,’’ the country manager of Premier Energy in Moldova, Jose Luis Gomez Pascual, said.
This initiative is inspired from the Opower programme from the United States of America.
The EU Sustainable Energy Week is held on 22-26 June, a period when energy efficiency, use of renewable energy are promoted and which directly help citizens and communities to save energy or use renewable energy sources.
