Chisinau, 8 July /MOLDPRES/ - The wheat harvest will be poorer this year because of the drought; the average harvest on Moldova will be of two tons per one hectare.

Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Minister Ion Perju on 7 July paid a working visit to north Moldova, in order to watch how the campaign of harvesting first-group cereals is carried out. In discussions held with farmers, the latter said that the impact of the hydrological drought can be noticed on each field. The farmers also said that they forecast a harvest by a half poorer than in 2019. They hope to get an average quantity of wheat of four tons per one hectare and about two tons of barley per one hectare.

In the context, Minister Ion Perju referred to the situation from all over Moldova, noting that ‘’in the southern region, the drought affected the farmlands at a level of 80 per cent; the harvest will be much poorer than in the last year, while according to the observations made in north Moldova, the situation is good and optimistic. This year, we will have an average harvest of wheat of about two tons per one hectare on the country.’’

About 400,000 hectares were sowed with winter crops in 2019-2020 agricultural year; the drought and the spring frost hit about 215,000 hectares: at the level of 25 per cent in the northern region and of 60-80 per cent in the central and south Moldova.
