First consignment of medical equipment worth 2.8 million euros, provided by EU, World Health Organization, brought to Moldova

Chisinau, 14 July /MOLDPRES/ - The first consignment of medical equipment, provided by the European Union and the World Health Organization (WHO), needed for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, has been brought to Moldova. Attending the event was Prime Minister Ion Chicu, along with Health, Labour and Social Protection Minister Viorica Dumbraveanu, Head of the EU Delegation in Moldova Peter Michalko, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Moldova Simon Springett and other officials, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.    

The support provided includes about 1.5 million individual protection equipments: medical masks, respirators, spectacles and protection coats, worth over 2.8 million euros in all. This is the first consignment of a 30.5-million-euros-worth humanitarian assistance, provided by EU to the Eastern Partnership countries.   

The PM thanked the European Union’s and WHO’s structures for the important assistance provided to Moldova, especially on these difficult periods: ‘’The support brought to Moldova will allow us enhancing the security and safety of the medical staff involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The generous support offered by EU and WHO to the Eastern Partnership countries is an additional proof of the creation of a common front regionally and globally. The help which we receive today fits in the complex measures undertaken by the government, assisted by development partners, for combating the spread of COVID-19.’’ 

The PM thanked including for the EU’s decision to disburse the second installment of the macro-financial assistance. He noted that the latter represented an appreciation of Moldova’s efforts to fulfill the conditions assumed.   

Moldova is to receive the second consignment of equipment, which will include more laboratory devices and will allow extending the capacities of patients’ testing, training the medical staff in detecting and treating patients, providing patients with medicines and medical equipment.   

Note. The European Union, along with the WHO Regional Office for Europe, launched a joint project – United for Health, for those six Eastern Partnership states, including Moldova. During two years, the countries will benefit from an overall support worth 30.5 million euros, meant for the prevention, detection and actions of response to the COVIOD-19 pandemic, as well as for strengthening the capacities of the EaP capacities to react to the emergency situations in the public health sector.
