Subject on producing seeds to be tackled by Moldovan government as priority

Chisinau, 24 July /MOLDPRES/ - „We are set to reestablish the branch of producing seeds in Moldova. It has a big economic potential,’’ Prime Minister Ion Chicu said at a 23 July visit paid to the Selectia (Selection) Research Institute of Field Crops from Balti. The institution is specialized in the production and working out of technologies of cultivating field crops, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.   

Ion Chicu visited experimental lands, where various native and European varieties grow. The PM was impressed by the efficient productivity of the varieties of Moldovan wheat seeds, with a harvest of 11 tons per one hectare, soy seeds – 4 tons/hectare, with an increased content of proteins, etc.

„We have here a patrimony which, if we lose it, neither the ninth generation of Moldovans will forgive us, as one cannot reestablish it afterwards. We saw here the country’s potential to reestablish the production of seeds of more crops of wheat, maize, sunflower and soy. These are unique varieties, which are quite adapted to the climate conditions we have. So, Moldova has potential to produce seeds,’’ the prime minister said.    

The government plans the implementation of a programme on reestablishing the system of seeds’ production. The state will subsidize the native producers of seeds, the farmers due to use the planting material, the farmers who will observe the crop rotation and those due to use organic fertilizers.   

Ion Chicu discussed with the Institution’s director and employees. They informed the PM about the problems they face: return to property of lands on an area of about 1,200 hectares, lack of young specialists in the field of research and the reorientation of an old kindergarten’s building as dwelling space for employees.   

The prime minister gave assurances that the government would provide needed support for the settlement of problems faced: ‘’The subject of seeds’ production will be tackled by the government as priority. We are interested in the development of this branch. There will be a different attitude,’’ Ion Chicu added.
