Commission for awarding National Prize nominated 13 winners of competition

Chisinau, 13 August /MOLDPRES/- The National Award Ceremony Committee chaired by Prime Minister Ion Chicu held a meeting to announce winners of 2020 National Prize, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
Commission members considered the files of 34 candidates participating in the competition in science, culture, medicine and sports. Out of all candidates, 13 participants gathered the required number of votes, being chosen National Prize winners.
Most awards, 6 in number, will be given to specialists in the medical sector, who showed examples of competence in the fight against the Covid-19 virus. In culture 5 winners and 1 winner each were selected in science and sports.
Previously, Ion Chicu presented the initiative to expand the number of winners of the National Award in the medical sector this year, as the pandemic crisis has created pressure on the medical system and staff.
According to the regulation, the commission members voiced their opinion by secret ballot, and the list of winners of the National Prize is to be approved at the next government meeting. Depending on the evolution of the epidemiological situation, the commission will take a decision on organization of the National Award Gala 2020.
The National Prize worth 100 thousand lei is awarded annually by the government as gratitude for outstanding results that have significantly contributed to promoting the country's image internationally and have had a great impact on scientific progress.
