Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/- On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of Iasi-Chisinau operation, President Igor Dodon together with Russian Ambassador Oleg Vasnetov, MPs and war veterans participated today in a memorial ceremony at the Serpeni Bridgehead memorial complex, the presidential press service has reported.
“Thanks to the Iasi ‒ Chisinau operation, from 20 to 29 August 1944 Moldova has been completely released. What our state represents today, what Europe as a whole represents is also due to the operation of the Serpeni bridgehead,” he said.
Dodon noted that in the liberation struggle and during the operation, officers and generals have shown unprecedented heroism and military skills. He said that in August 1944 alone, about 20,000 soldiers and officers on the 2nd and 3rd fronts of the Red Army were awarded orders and medals for courage and bravery.
The president noted with regret that the more time takes us away from the tragedy of that war, the more difficult it is for us to become fully aware of the extraordinary human qualities that were specific to every soldier and officer of that army of liberators. Dodon stressed that it is our moral responsibility to worship the soldiers who have won freedom of Moldovan land.
He said that Serpeni memorial complex has become a monument of the whole people. The president voiced confidence that despite the time, the memorial complex will remain one of the main symbols of patriotic education of our children and grandchildren.
"I am very happy to have veterans of that terrible war. We bow before them and fallen soldiers who fought for this land. And we through conclusive actions must keep the memory of the soldiers, heroism, courage and devotion to the Motherland. Glory to the Heroes of the Great War! ”, he said.
