Chisinau, 4 July /MOLDPRES/ - One former governor and two deputy governors of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) will be tried within the file with the general title, Bank Fraud.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG), they are accused of complicity with the committing of the offence of swindle, committed through abuse of power, as well as of money laundering in particularly large amounts.
Prosecutors said that, in 2014, the BNM governor, as well as another two deputy governors would have acted in interests of a criminal organization, led by the former leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Vladimir Plahotniuc, and worked out and implemented a plan on the purloining of financial means in particularly large amounts from the national banking system.
Prosecutors found out that the organization led by Vladimir Plahotniuc would have been made up of more groups: the one led by Veaceslav Platon, by Vladimir Andronachi and Ilan Shor. The latter, for his part, was de facto controlling, by interposed people, the commercial banks Unibank, Banca Sociala (Social Bank) and Banca de Economii (Savings Bank).
Hence, during 2014, the BNM governor, as well as the two deputy governors of the National Bank, as persons affiliated with the organization, removed the obstacles and provided the instruments necessary for the purloining of the money available at the three banks, including through the approval in the banks’ leadership bodies of the people affiliated with the group led by Ilan Shor and through the non-intervening in the defective activity of these institutions.
Thus, the actions would have allowed the organization members to purloin about 2,544,782,105.6 lei and to integrate the stolen money in the legal circulation of Moldova and other states.
Anticorruption prosecutors levied distraints on the assets of the former BNM governor worth 1,684,072.01 lei and, respectively, the assets of a former BNM deputy governor, worth 2,480,660.3 lei.
