Chisinau, 2 July /MOLDPRES/- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide Moldova with 10 million euros for creating a regional operator, meant to modernise water supply network infrastructure in the northern country. The two loan agreements were ratified by the parliament today.
Presently, the water services from the northern country are in the management of local authorities via water companies. Acting Environment Minister Sergiu Palihovici said "capacity of these companies to manage the wastewater systems is insufficient".
"The nucleus of the project on creation of regional operator will be existing aqueduct Soroca - Balti, built in 1980. Major investments are needed to restore functionality of this aqueduct", Palihovici said.
EBRD credit will be offered in two installments, 6 million and 4 million euros, and EIB credit will be earmarked in ten installments of 1 million euros each.
Over 400,000 citizens in the north will benefit from the results of the project.
