Moldovan deputy foreign minister meets UN special rapporteur

Chisinau, 10 September /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Foreign and European Integration Andrei Galbur today met UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Catalina Devandas Aguilar, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication service has reported.
The special official is paying a visit to Moldova between 10 and 17 September, to assess the level of national implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other relevant commitments.
The sides discussed the adopted legal framework, initiatives launched by national institutions, with the support of civil society and development partners and obstacles hindering the observance of the rights of persons with disabilities.
Deputy Minister Galbur reiterated that the government gave priority to human rights' observance, noting that recommendations coming after the Special Rapporteur's visit would help identifying the mechanisms needed to achieve the set objectives.
For her part, Catalina Devandas Aguilar said policies and initiatives launched by Moldova on the rights of persons with disabilities could subsequently serve as an example for other countries.
This is the first visit of a UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities in Moldova, with the UN Human Rights Council establishing this office in June 2014.
